Implementation methodology

The current state of the waters in the area of application of the Action Plan is characterized as poor both qualitatively and quantitatively, as it appears that there is a relative drop in the piezometric level in 68% of the wells.

For this reason, the methodology of the project’s implementation concerns the mitigation of the effects of climate change through methodical and integrated planning, to maintain the underground and surface waters in good condition, while simultaneously covering the anthropogenic and environmental water needs.

The approach will be based on a complete combined water management plan and interventions to limit water losses and conserve and efficiently use irrigation water. It is necessary to restore, maintain and modernize the existing irrigation networks, in order to control and minimize the losses of irrigation water. Also, the correct planning and selection of irrigation methods is necessary in order to avoid over-irrigation of the crops. Saving irrigation water will be achieved through optimal planning of irrigation and accurate calculation of irrigation needs. In addition, farmers should be informed and guided to adopt best irrigation practices To assess crop yield and quality under irrigation conditions with a smart water management system.

Laboratory analyzes will be carried out on the biomass produced (pesticides, mycotoxins, dioxins, heavy metals) as well as on the soil (soil), irrigation water (physicochemical) and fertilization (nutrient analyses). Finally, it is important to assess the of the piezometric level of the underground waters, to avoid over-pumping and over-exploitation of the aquifer. The implementation of the above actions is expected to save energy and natural resources, ensure sustainability in development and protect the environment of Lake Koroneia.
